Yes! Regardless of your athletic ability, SOTR welcomes ALL students who are prepared to push their limits and embrace the joy of running.

Whether you possess extensive athletic experience or are a complete novice, our program fosters a supportive and inclusive atmosphere where individuals of all backgrounds can flourish and succeed.

Students on the Run is currently limited to high school students.

Training sessions are held every Tuesday and Thursday immediately after school. All of these runs are done in the neighborhoods surrounding your school.

Beginning in January, students from all the local high schools will come together for a big group long run on Saturday mornings! We will meet at RunWell in Edwardsville. The route will be marked and water will be provided along the course. Pancakes will be served after the run!

Participants who successfully complete the half marathon may receive a commemorative finisher's medal as a symbol of their achievement.

Parents or guardians can get involved with SOTR in several ways:

  1. Volunteer as Coaches: Parents or guardians with running experience or a passion for fitness can volunteer as coaches. They can help lead training sessions, provide guidance, and support the students throughout their journey.
  2. Fundraising Support: Parents or guardians can assist with fundraising efforts by spreading awareness about SOTR and seeking sponsorship opportunities from local businesses or community members.
  3. Event Support: During the half marathon or other related events, parents or guardians can volunteer as race marshals, aid station attendants, or event coordinators to ensure the smooth running of the event and provide support to the participants.
  4. Cheerleading and Encouragement: Parents or guardians can attend training sessions and events to cheer on the students, provide moral support, and celebrate their achievements. Their presence and encouragement can greatly motivate the participants.

Please see our Volunteer page to apply.

Safety is a top priority during training sessions and the half marathon. Some common safety measures include:

  1. Qualified Coaches and Volunteers: Coaches and/or volunteers oversee the training sessions, ensuring that participants receive proper guidance, supervision, and support throughout their journey. Additionally, each coach/volunteer will be required to undergo a background check.
  2. Warm-up and Cool-down: Training sessions include warm-up and cool-down exercises to prepare participants' bodies for running and minimize the risk of injury.
  3. Gradual Progression: Training programs are designed with a progressive approach, gradually increasing the intensity and duration of workouts to prevent overexertion and reduce the likelihood of overuse injuries.
  4. First Aid and Medical Support: Trained personnel or medical professionals are available during the half marathon to provide immediate first aid or medical assistance if needed.
  5. Route Safety and Traffic Control: For the half marathon, appropriate measures are taken to ensure a safe route for runners, including traffic control, well-marked paths, and volunteer support at intersections or high-traffic areas.
